Deadlock is free to play, unreleased, invite-only and unfinished. What that means for whether your time is well spent.
Is Deadlock Worth Playing in 2026? An Honest Take
Yes, if you can get in and you already know what a MOBA is. No, if you need a finished game with a public release date, a console version, or guides that stay true for longer than a patch. The trade fits in one line: you get a game that already plays like a real MOBA, in exchange for accepting that you are playing a build its maker expects to change.

The four things that are settled
| Question | Answer as of October 3, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Does it cost money? | Nothing to buy. No price, no purchase option |
| Is it released? | No. Release Date reads To be announced, and the page says the game is not yet available on Steam |
| How do you get in? | A Steam friend invite from a playtester. There is no public sign-up queue |
| How finished is it? | Valve's notice: early development, with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay |
Valve's About block calls Deadlock an early development build and limits access to friend invites via its playtesters. The page also carries Free to Play among its tags, and that tag is the only thing resembling a price promise: the app record for app 1422450 returns is_free as false with an empty package list. Launch pricing has never been published, System Requirements reads TBD for everything except a 64-bit processor, and the app record lists Windows yes, Mac no, Linux no.

The real gate is access. There is no sign-up queue, and a Steam account that has never spent $5 cannot take part even with an invite in hand. Read how to get a Deadlock invite before deciding anything; if you are the one sending one, the sender-side guide covers why invites seem to vanish.
What you get once you are inside
The match loop is finished in the way that matters. Six heroes a side push lanes, farm souls, break Guardians, then Walkers, then the base, and finish with a ritual in the opposing team's Patron. What is Deadlock has the full shape; none of it reads as a placeholder. Souls are the economy, and Investment tracks jump at fixed thresholds, last revised as 4.8k / 6.4k / 8k / 11.2k / 16k on the May 22, 2026 patch. Movement is a stamina-gated system of dashes, slides, wall jumps and mantles, which is where Polygon found the steep curve and high ceiling that keep people playing.
Ranked exists too. It went live in the July 30, 2026 matchmaking update: a ladder from Obscurus, the uncalibrated starting rank, up to Eternus, six subranks per step, a gate of 60 Standard wins plus three heroes with 15 Standard wins apiece, solo or duo parties only, and seasons that reset your rank. A year ago the honest answer to is-it-worth-it was that there was no ladder at all. The ranked and MMR guide covers how it moves.
Players also set the content order. Since City Never Sleeps, hero voting happens in the Pregame lobby, two heroes release a week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2:00pm PT, the winning team's votes count double, and your first win of the day doubles them again. The earlier Old Gods round logged 60,776,963 votes. Very few games let the crowd pick the unlock order and hold Valve to it. The voting guide has the current rules and the release schedule the dated slots. On October 3 the roster was 39 playable heroes, with five of September's six still vote-locked.
What Valve admits it has not built yet
In the post announcing six heroes and a rebuilt City, Valve listed its own backlog. After Old Gods, New Blood it "felt that there was still a good amount of work we wanted to do on the core game itself before we moved onto more polish phases", and there are other things like "Midboss (both the model and the layout to a degree), Guardians and Walkers, which we do consider important but just haven't gotten to yet". Hero remodels come further out. Large item redesigns and alternate modes are named as speculative.

That list decides who this suits. Midboss, Guardians and Walkers are not cosmetics; they are the objective chain you are learning this month, and Valve just said it plans to rebuild them. GamingOnLinux read the same post on October 1, 2026 and concluded the update makes the game feel a lot more complete while it is still a while away from a public release.
Where the friction actually is
- The art is temporary, in Valve's words. Not early-access polish. The store notice says lots of temporary art, and hero remodels are still on the list.
- Guides rot faster here than in a live game. The June 30, 2026 update rescaled 131 entries; the September 16 minor update changed 86 more. A tier list dated September 16 is already history, so reading the patch yourself beats any published ranking.
- Content expires while you learn it. The Broker, who traded high-tier items for Corrupted versions with randomised downsides, was tied to the new-hero window and left when Rat King landed on October 2. Four days of it, and the timeline is here.
- Performance is unanswered. With no requirements published, the only reports are player ones: frame-rate collapses near bases and high-ground structures, stutter tending to arrive after the fifteen-minute mark, and some players dropping render quality to 40 percent to cope.
- The invite is a dependency you do not control. Invites arrive between ten minutes and two days, players report them going missing, and if your one friend in the game stops playing, your access goes with them.
A peak player count quoted without its tracker and date is decoration. And unreleased is not evidence that a game is abandoned, which is the opposite of what Valve's own backlog says.
How many people are playing, and why the number is a trap
| Figure | What it measures | Outlet and date |
|---|---|---|
| 228,208 | All-time concurrent peak | SteamDB charts, peak dated October 2, 2026 |
| Over 220,000 | Concurrent peak the night City Never Sleeps landed; sixth most-played game on Steam | IGN, late September 2026 |
| 98,887 | January 2026 peak after Old Gods, New Blood, up from 29,153 the month before | Dexerto, citing SteamDB |
| 171,490 | The previous all-time peak | Dexerto, September 2024 |
| 108,821 | Concurrent at the moment of checking | SteamDB, October 3, 2026 |
Three figures circulate for that same record, 228,068 and 228,086 and 228,208, because trackers scrape at different moments. Valve publishes no count, and Steam's official player API returns a meaningless 42 because an invite-only build is not publicly visible. That is how Polygon could write in good faith that after the January 2026 update Deadlock's concurrent count passed Overwatch's on Steam. Repeat that with the date attached, not as a current fact. None of these numbers decide whether you will enjoy the game; they say the crowd is not leaving.
So should you start now
Start now if you have a friend inside, you have played a MOBA before, your machine survives those performance reports, and you like watching a game get built. Wait if you want a stable ladder to grind, you need guides that last more than two weeks, you play on console, or you bounce off unfinished art. Waiting costs nothing: no price, no pre-order, no early-access commitment to honour. The community thread asking whether to give it another chance in 2026 is mostly that same split, between players who left and players who stayed; the beginners guide is for the ones who stayed.
FAQ
Is Deadlock free to play? The store page tags it Free to Play, but the app record reports is_free as false with an empty package list and no purchase option. There is no price and nothing to buy.
Is Deadlock dead? No. Two major updates in 2026, ranked mode in July, a hero vote in September, and its highest concurrent peak ever in the first week of October, according to SteamDB.
When does it come out? Nobody knows. The store page says To be announced, press reporting in April 2026 said Valve had confirmed no open beta was planned in the near future, and the September post still lists future work with no dates attached.
Can I play on Mac, Linux or console? The Steam record lists Windows only, players run it unofficially through Proton, and Valve has never announced a console version.
Is it worth playing if I cannot get an invite? No, and there is no workaround. It is not cracked, not on another launcher and not in a queue. Access is a Steam friend invite, full stop. If you are still deciding, the comparison page is the faster question.
