Valve's Sept 29, 2026 major patch: rebuilt map and four new districts, Haunts replacing neutral camps, The Broker, six voted heroes, HUD and QoL work.
Deadlock City Never Sleeps Update: Full Breakdown
City Never Sleeps shipped on September 29, 2026 — the largest Deadlock patch of 2026: a rebuilt map with four new districts, neutral camps turned into Haunts, a limited-time merchant called The Broker, six heroes on a vote schedule, and the heaviest HUD and accessibility pass the game has had. Valve used the same announcement to say the game is still unfinished, and to list what has not been built yet.
Two things catch people out: the Broker was temporary (he leaves once the first new hero arrives — Rat King landed October 2), and "neutrals" are now officially Haunts. Nothing here opened the game up.

What shipped in the map
From Valve's own City Never Sleeps page, the map has nine named locations: Uptown, Times Square, Downtown, Umbria University, Central Park, The Brownstones, Stock Exchange, Old Fairfax Factories and Seaport Dock. The new layer sits underneath: four Districts — The Theater, Chinatown, Haunted Lot and Plaza. The Chinatown Bell Tower is a concentrated soul hotspot; the Sunken Plaza under the Plaza District drains your stamina as you descend.
Official wording names only two lanes, Blue Lane and Green Lane — guides describing four lanes describe a map that no longer exists. Start from the post-patch lanes and districts map instead.
| New object | What it does |
|---|---|
| Buff Containers | Revamped golden statues; now grant permanent Spirit Resist, Bullet Resist, Ability Range or Move Speed |
| Tough Crates | Need a Heavy Melee; extra souls inside |
| Healing Snacks | Hidden around the map, heal in a pinch |
| Steam Vents | Invisibility plus a little regen while standing on them |
Haunts replaced neutral camps
Valve renamed the neutral camps outright: "the neutrals you know have been replaced by a variety of creatures with new behaviors." Nine families carry official descriptions — Specimen, Past Dues, Gutter Ghouls, Barrel Mimics, Stage Hands, Festival Spirit, Crabbage Pots, Non-edible Shrooms and Underhands — and the HUD gained a "More Haunt Information" panel showing soul value and comparative difficulty.
No camp count, tier table or per-family numbers were published; the "40 camps" figure and the teal/yellow/red tier eye-colours are community-sourced. The Haunt camps reference separates the two.
The Broker and Corrupted items
The Broker is a "mysterious merchant known only as the Broker" selling demon-touched items, and his function is an exchange: while supplies last, you trade a high-tier item for a Corrupted version. His schedule was specific — the first shipment stocks around 30 minutes into a match, then further Corrupted items become collectable on average every 15 minutes.
The cost is randomness. Each match assigns every Corrupted item negative attributes from a predefined set, rolled identically for every player in that game. Valve capped it: Corrupted items are banned on the streets of New York, and the Broker leaves once the first new hero arrives.
Corrupted guides still read like the mechanic is live. Check what happened to Corrupted items and The Broker before farming for a shop that no longer spawns.
Six heroes, decided by your vote
City Never Sleeps introduced six heroes: Rat King, Nurse Harrow, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. Valve kept the Old Gods, New Blood model where the player vote sets release order, two heroes a week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2:00pm PT, first release October 2. Rat King went live that day.
Voting moved out of the Hideout ballot box into the new Pregame lobby. The winning team's votes count as double, your first win of the day doubles them again, and playing earns New Hero Priority Tokens. Valve listed campaign posters but no skill descriptions for five of the six — as of October 3, only Rat King has named abilities.
The hero vote guide kills the old Hideout-booth instructions; the release schedule has the dated slot table. Slots two through six were undecided at the time of writing.
HUD, shop, voice and accessibility
The HUD pass is what you will feel every match: new healthbars, ally indicators, an event feed showing what item or ability landed the killing blow, bounty breakdowns, a Soul Bag prompt, stamina tracking and falloff guides showing where your weapon damage drops off. The shop narrows to popular items using live player data and adds build copy-paste, and pings now cover troopers, Haunts, ziplines, the Rift and the shop. Accessibility added Auto Move, Auto Mantle, Auto Fire and subtitle customisation.
Valve's own figures: pre-match conversations between heroes went from over 700 to 1500, over 10,000 non-ping voice lines were added, and separately over 15,000 ping lines were updated. Reports that City Never Sleeps added "15,000 new voice lines" collapse two counters into one.

What changed under the hood
Engine code moved to the latest Source 2 build, with network prediction, rendering and audio performance work, and what Valve simply calls "improved anti-cheat" — the post names no specific system. Ability and item use now fires the instant you press the button instead of waiting for the next window, the biggest feel change in the patch. Street Brawl also grants a Corrupted item after the Round 5 draft.
What Valve says is still unfinished
This is the part most write-ups skipped. Valve thanked the community for its support "despite the game being unfinished," and said that after Old Gods New Blood there was "still a good amount of work we wanted to do on the core game itself before we moved onto more polish phases." Their own list of what is not done or not decided:
- Progression and hero/hideout customisations — in progress, and Valve wants to "adjust and significantly change based on feedback before the game is fully released."
- Large item redesigns and additions, plus alternate game modes — explicitly speculative: "we aren't 100% sure if they will be released or not."
- Midboss, Guardians and Walkers — "we do consider important but just haven't gotten to yet."
- Hero remodels — scheduled for later, "towards the end of early development."
No public release date exists: the Steam store page still says "To be announced" and access is still invite-only, and GamingOnLinux covered the same post as a game still a while from public release. If you're deciding whether to get in, what Deadlock actually is and how to get an invite are the honest starting points.
Numbers you will see quoted wrong
| Claim you'll see | What Valve actually said |
|---|---|
| "90 Corrupted items" | No official count; 90 is a community figure for Corrupted-eligible items |
| "Vote at the Hideout ballot box, +4 votes a day" | Old Gods rules. City Never Sleeps moved voting to Pregame, to Tuesdays and Fridays, with the first win of the day doubled |
| "Deadlock uses VAC" | The post says "improved anti-cheat" and names nothing |
The launch spike
This patch produced the largest concurrent peak Deadlock has recorded, but the number is not clean: SteamDB shows an all-time high in the 228,000 range, with reporting split between 228,068, 228,086 and 228,208 depending on capture time, and outlets dating it to September 29 or October 2, 2026. Treat any single precise figure as a capture timestamp — Valve has published no player numbers.
The community wiki's own page for this patch, fetched October 4, 2026, lists the map rework, Haunts, The Broker and a long technical changelog — but none of Valve's development-status language, none of the four Districts, and none of The Broker's timing rules. That gap is why this page exists.
FAQ
Is City Never Sleeps the last big update before release? No, and Valve did not say it was. Midboss, Guardians and Walkers are listed as upcoming work.
Did the September 29 update let everyone into the game? No. The Steam store page still limits access to friend invites via playtesters.
Can you still get Corrupted items from The Broker? Not from him — he left once Rat King arrived on October 2, 2026. Street Brawl still hands one out after the Round 5 draft.
Are the Haunt tier colours official, and when is the next hero? No on the first: Valve published the nine family names and an in-game panel, but no tier colours or camp count. On the second, the next slot was Tuesday October 6, 2026 at 2:00pm PT, decided by the in-game vote.
