Every tier list is stale within a patch. How to judge strength from mobility, damage and role fit instead of copying a chart.
Deadlock Meta in October 2026: How to Read It Yourself
There is no durable Deadlock tier list, and the reason is measurable: counting titles in Valve's own announcement feed, fifteen balance or gameplay patches shipped between March 6 and September 16, 2026, one every 14 days on average. City Never Sleeps then replaced the map, the neutral camps and the shop on September 29. So this page gives you four inputs that decide a hero, a routine for measuring them, and an as-of date instead of a letter grade.
What the Deadlock meta is on October 3, 2026
| Input | Where it stands |
|---|---|
| Roster | 39 playable: 38 confirmed before City Never Sleeps, plus Rat King on October 2. Five more are vote-locked, no kit details published (counted here) |
| Ladder | Ranked Season 1 began July 30 and ends October 7 per Valve's post; in-game text says October 8 |
| Drops | Five heroes still to arrive, October 6, 9, 13, 16 and 20 by the Tuesday/Friday 2:00 PM PT rule (schedule) |
| Economy | Investment bonus lines sit at 4.8k / 6.4k / 8k / 11.2k / 16k since May 22; souls per minute fell from 90 to 80 on September 16 (souls) |
Deadlock is an invite-only early development build: the store page still lists the release date as "To be announced", and Valve's September 29 post says Midboss, Guardians and Walkers are unfinished. Everything below is true as of the October 3, 2026 build.

Official source: City Never Sleeps, Valve's announcement, September 29, 2026 and the update page list a map and neutral rework, six heroes released by vote and HUD additions. Valve publishes no hero grades and no role classes.
Why tier lists expire, and how to date one
Fifteen balance or gameplay patches landed between March 6 and September 16, six after July 1, and heroes were rewritten inside them:
| Date | Post | Hero-specific changes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-05-22 | Gameplay Update | 30 heroes named in dedicated lines, 130 hero lines total |
| 2026-06-30 | Minor Update | 21 heroes, 84 hero lines |
| 2026-09-16 | Minor Update | 19 heroes, 65 hero lines |
Redo it: pull the public news feed for appid 1422450, filter to Valve's Community Announcements, and count bullet lines starting with a hero's name and a colon.
Two traps catch beginners faster than any balance change.
A tier list's publish date is not its read date. LFCarry's Season 1 list was updated on September 29, 2026 with win-rate readings dated September 16: newer than the last patch, still describing the one before it.
Trackers fill gaps with guesses. The community roster page went from 38 heroes to 44 in a day without Valve publishing anything, because five unplayable heroes were added to fill a grid. Check the changelog forum before trusting a placement, and treat a vote-locked hero's rank as a guess until the vote fills that slot.
On any tracker, including the Statlocker prediction page and the deadlocklabs tracker, find four things: the date the numbers were read, the sample size, the pick rate beside the win rate, and whether that date is before or after the last patch.
The four inputs that decide a hero
Everything a tier list compresses comes out of these four.
| Input | What it decides | Dated anchor |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | How far you go before a fight, and how you survive losing one | Dash jump 18m to 19m, input window 0.2s to 0.25s (June 30); move slows cut ~20% globally and now affect air drag by 35% of the slow value (September 16) |
| Effective HP | Whether you win the trade when four people focus you | Base HP cut 10 and HP per boon 3 for all heroes (May 22); HP per boon cut 5% (June 30); then per-hero reversals: Billy +48 to +59 per boon (May 22), Holliday +41 to +43, Graves +33 to +35 (September 16) |
| Reliable damage | Whether you can end a fight without a clean headshot | No official damage table exists, so measure by attribution |
| Role fit | Whether your pick survives the rest of the lobby | Valve has published no roles, so pick rate is the tell |
Effective HP is the one beginners misread. Two heroes with the same HP bar convert souls into health at different rates, and Valve edits those rates separately, sometimes upward, in the patch that cuts them globally. Add sustain: the Rejuvenator buff went from 4 minutes to 3 on June 30, the May 22 item Grit grants 200 Barrier for 4 seconds on a 60-second cooldown, and CC reduction has been 10% then 30% inside an 8-second window since March 6.
Reliable damage is where September 29 handed you instruments. Falloff Guides show where weapon damage starts falling off and where it bottoms out, the Event Feed breaks down what item or ability landed the killing blow, and Popular Items narrows the shop using live purchase data. Damage that lands on a dodging target beats damage that needs one lucky bullet.
Run your own ten-match audit
Stop reading grades and start writing rows: ten matches, one hero, then fill this in.
| Record | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Date and hero | Your notes; this is what makes the audit expire |
| Investment at 10, 20, 30 minutes | The Investments readout added September 29 |
| Souls per minute, last hits landed, deaths before 10 minutes | Your farm log and the kill feed, which hides mobility cost |
| What landed your last five kills | Event Feed: item, ability or weapon |
Then ask three questions. Can you leave a fight without committing? Does the kit work when you are focused first? Is your damage arriving from the front of the weapon or from one lucky bullet? Those answers survive a patch; an S rank does not. If your ten matches disagree with a tier list, your ten matches are more current.
Valve publishes balance posts on a rhythm you can watch in the official changelog forum. Re-measure when a patch lands, and again when a hero arrives: a hero's value depends on the other five picks.
Climbing and Street Brawl need two different audits
Ranked gates shape the meta before strength matters: 60 Standard wins to queue, 15 wins on a hero to bring it, three heroes unlocked. That argues for two or three heroes on rotation, because the ladder does not care which is strongest, only which you have banked.
Street Brawl is a different game in the same client and a Standard-mode audit does not transfer. Each round starts with equal resources and no farming, players add three items per round, and since September 29 a corrupted item lands after the Round 5 draft. Economy heroes lose the edge that makes them strong in a standard match, so judge them on rounds, not matches. Read the mode rules first.
Pick one hero per job, then let the audit overrule it
Start from the job. The roster guide groups heroes into five jobs, none of them Valve's, because Valve has never published roles.
Take the group matching how you move, then apply the audit. If you only enjoy fights you chose, start with mobility. If you hold a lane while four people farm, start with effective HP and check the per-boon conversion. If you play into a Stamina bar and lose patience, start with reliable damage. Score badly after ten matches? Switch groups, not letters. Still early? Your first three matches beats a tier chart.
FAQ
Is there an official Deadlock tier list? No. Valve publishes patch notes, one hero announcement at a time and a vote schedule, and has never published hero grades, win rates or role classes.
Which heroes are strongest right now? As of October 3, 2026 no answer survives a fortnight: 39 playable, five vote-locked with no kit details published, all five landing by October 20. Run the audit.
Do September tier lists still apply? No. The last balance patch was September 16 and City Never Sleeps landed September 29, so September data describes a map and neutral economy that no longer exist. See what the update changed.
Are hero roles official? No. Every tank, initiator and support list in the genre is community reading, including ours. A job describes play, not strength.
